You’d think that, by now, the Internet trolls would have learned that Ariel Winter is not going to take their criticism lying down. (Unfortunately, they haven’t.)
So, in the meantime, Ariel continues to fire back, preaching nothing but self-love, body acceptance, and a no-judgment policy. She did just that on Thursday, when social media users with nothing better to do found it necessary to comment on the length of the shorts Ariel wore while out with friends on Wednesday night. In a picture of the “squad” that she posted to Instagram on Thursday, the Modern Family star wears black cutoff shorts, a black bralette, and over-the-knee black boots.
Despite the fact that Ariel looks happy and confident in her outfit, enough rude comments came pouring in that she decided to address them head-on in a “small rant” she posted to Twitter on Thursday. “Pretty annoyed about the focus on the fact that I wear shorts, and the commentary that I’m ‘squeezing’ into them or the idea that it’s not okay for me to wear shorts,” the 19-year-old wrote. “It’s SUMMER. Get over it. It’s hot, I’m obviously going to be wearing minimal clothes. I’m not going to suffer in a turtleneck to please anyone.”
She continued, “I’m not a whore because I wear shorts and tank tops. I’m a normal girl. Also, I’m not ‘squeezing’ into anything. My shorts fit me and everything I’m doing is just fine.” She ended on a powerful note: “Please leave young women alone. We’re just living our lives. It’s really troubling that we even have to deal with this kind of stuff nowadays. Please stop criticizing everything everyone does!!!!!”
Ariel has taken it upon herself time and time again to clap back at body-shamers who mistakenly believe they have the right to comment on women’s appearances. In May, after being criticized for wearing a super glam gold minidress to a screening with the rest of the Modern Family cast Ariel took to Instagram to share a message aboutembracing your individuality. “Why TF does anyone care that I didn’t dress casual like everyone else for the panel? Why do I have to be like everyone else? Why can’t people just let other people feel good about themselves and do what they want?” she wrote. “As long as you feel good about yourself that’s what matters. I know I did. Don’t ever let anyone stifle who you are and how you express yourself.”
