It’s almost festival season, and you know what that means: Your Instagram feed will soon be filled with photos of people frolicking in the sunshine in jean shorts, flower crowns, culturally appropriated accessories (unfortunately), and, of course, denim thongs. Yep, you read that right. As Cosmopolitan recently discovered, British online retailer PrettyLittleThing recently started selling the “Mid Wash Denim Knicker.” Perhaps inspired by how regular denim shorts ride up uncomfortably after a long day of wear, these “knickers” are a pair of high-waisted jorts with the fabric that would normally cover your backside completely cut away. How practical.
The denim thongs, which have (obviously) already sold out and retailed for £15 (about $21), were described on the PrettyLittleThing site as “seriously flattering.” “Dare to wear these fierce denim knickers girl,” the product description reads, before oh-so-helpfully suggesting, “Team these with some killer chap trousers and matching bralet for a show-stopping festival outfit that is gonna get you noticed for all of the right reasons.” If you say so.
Twitter users reacted to the out-there jorts with a wide range of emotions, from shock to confusion to, yes, excitement. “The more I see those denim thong shorts & everyone slating them the more I like them in the basket they go,” one brave tweeter declared.
With “weird denim” somehow becoming the longest-lasting trend of the past few years — see: clear jeans, invisible jeans, and triple-waistband jeans, among many, many others — it should come as littler surprise that these are not the first thong-inspired denim items we’ve seen. During the Thibaut show at Amazon Fashion Week Tokyo last October, a model walked down the runway wearing “jeans” that were basically just a waistband attached to a few strips of denim trailing down the sides of her legs and the middle of her butt. For those days when you want to wear jeans, but you also want to show off your cute new underwear.
