6 Fall Nail Colors That Are Going To Be Huge This Year

One of the hardest parts of accepting that it’s finally fall is giving up the bright, punchy orange and neon pink nail polishes of summer. All those eye-catching shades rotate to the back of the medicine cabinet, while the blood reds and cool blues move to the top-shelf spot. But if you think you’re going to spend the next six months bored by your nail polish choices, think again.

Even if you have your DIY mani down to a science — nursing that almost dried-up bottle of Ballet Slippers — don’t discount what’s on trend for nails this season, because these colors are some of the most stunning we’ve seen all year long. To get the scoop, we consulted two celebrity nail artists: Tracylee Percival and Elle, who’ve dolled up the hands of A-listers like Olivia Munn and Blake Lively. They gave us the rundown of nail colors that are about to be huge. So, we’ll know what to grab next time we find ourselves fumbling through the shelves of polishes at Target.

Scroll through for a peek at our fall nail color trend report, which includes the exact polishes to shop before you see them all over everyone’s apple-picking Instagrams.

There is a lot of product out there — some would say too much. At Refinery29, we’re here to help you navigate this overwhelming world of stuff. All of our market picks are independently selected and curated by the editorial team, but if you buy something we link to on our site, Refinery29 may earn commission.

Red Wine

Deep, vampy red — the same shade as the cozy glass of Cabernet Sauvignon you’ll sip while unpacking your fall cardigans — are a seasonal staple. Get creative when you wear the plum-red color on your nails, and try a matte velvet top coat.

Chanel LE VERNIS Velvet Nail Colour, $28, available at Chanel

Sapphire Blue

“My clients seem to keep choosing this shade from my fall collection,” Percival tells us. Elle agrees that dark blue is a must-have this season. Go for a shiny navy base, then switch things up with a fun accent nail using gold chrome or glitter.

Essie Gel Couture Nail Polish in Caviar Bar, $11.49, available at Target

Bright White

White for fall? Seems passé, but we assure you, it’s happening. Crisp clean polish is a fresh way to wear white (and play up your tan) beyond Labor Day weekend. Percival also points out it’s not only a year-round Instagram favorite, but white is also becoming a popular polish on the red carpet.

JINsoon Absolute White, $18, available at Jin Soon

Mauve Blush

“Mauve-y, blush nude colors have also been another client favorite,” Percival tells us. “I recently used this exact color on Olivia Munn for the 2018 VMAs.” The neutral tone is a cooler version of beige, a baby’s breath nude, and it works really well on a variety of skin tones. Elle adds that a subtle way to make your blush mani unique is to add a matte finish over just your ring and pinkie fingers.

Zoya Zoya Nail Polish, $9.99, available at Zoya

Rusty Copper

As opposed to a candy apple red, slightly deeper, orange-tinged reds are in full swing for fall this year. “It was seen throughout the runways in the U.S. and Europe,” says Percival.

Smith & Cult Nail Polish – Tang Bang, $18, available at Net-A-Porter

Taupe Silver

Taupe silver is a softer approach to chrome that still maintains that fresh and shiny feel. This color is especially good for fun accents and nail art. Elle tells us that a foolproof approach is to pair the cool gray with a nude beige color.

Morgan Taylor Morgan Taylor Are You Lion To Me?, $5.99, available at esther’s nail center
